5 Books With Mermaids

It’s time for another Top 5 Saturday (led by the wonderful Mandy @ Devouring Books)! So I’m totally expanding the definition of mermaid in this post… turns out I haven’t read a lot of books about mermaids? I know, I was surprised too! So I’m including sirens as well as people who live beneath the ocean. Let’s get into it! (btw all images link to the book’s Goodreads page!)

Five Books With Mermaids

Coral by Sara Ella

Coral is by far the best mermaid book I’ve read in a while. This beautiful story retells The Little Mermaid by Han Christian Anderson while also exploring mental health, depression, and suicide. It’s so beautiful and touching. You can read my full review here.

Into the Hourglass by Emily R. King

For the love of all things mermaids, please check out the first book Before the Broken Star before diving into this one. This series is AMAZING, and if the fact that mermaids play a part in the sequel interests you, GOOD. You can read my full review of the first book here.

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

This is one of those books where sirens, not necessarily mermaids, play a big part in this book. I won’t tell you how, because spoilers, but you should definitely read this book anyways. It’s full of swashbuckling goodness and an ultra-swoony romance! You can read my full review here.

Ingo by Helen Dunmore

I read this soooo long ago, when I was in middle school. Maybe even elementary school. It has four stars on my Goodreads, but no review. I do remember being totally enchanted by it though. Has anyone else read this one?

Mera: Tidebreaker by Danielle Paige

Alright, so Mera isn’t a mermaid or a siren, but she’s an Atlantian (I was really needing a fifth book, alright?) This graphic novel shows Mera as a teen, when she first meets Arthur (aka Aquaman) when they are teens. Their romance is adorable, and I really enjoyed reading about Mera as a central character rather than a secondary love interest. Definitely recommend this one.

What are your favorite books with mermaids in them?

  1. I am not participating this week because I know of two books this week. There is the one I hates- All the Stars and Teeth and slaughtered in my review. Then there is one coming up that I am reading as an ARC but cannot remember the title.

But I am checking out everyone’s list for recommendations. The Coral is one I think I should definitely add!

      1. Yes! I believe you were the lone wolf in support of my snark towards All the Tropes and Tropes lol. That’s ok though. Let it hit the best sellers list. I sold out Ink In the Blood before it even officially released because it was put on the shelf early at the bookstore and then sold another copy last night when it was restocked. So 😋 lol Meanwhile only one copy of All the Tropes and Tropes has sold.

  2. I almost had Coral on my list as well!! And I featured Daughter of A Pirate King a different week, but really wanted to feature it again as well. Really great choices!! What you wrote about Coral has me way more interested than I was initially when I just thought it was a Little Mermaid retelling.

  3. I had Coral on my list for this as well! I’m looking forward to giving it a try as I’ve heard some pretty interesting things about it. I am absolutely loving that cover for Into the Hourglass but haven’t heard of this series before so I will definitely be checking it out. Sounds interesting! Great list 🙂
