ARC Review: Wonder Woman: The Just War

This wonderful book was my first accepted request on Edelweiss! Thanks DC! I’ve been a long-time fan of Wonder Woman and her comics, so I was ecstatic when I found out I could read this early.

Title: Wonder Woman Vol 1: The Just War
Author: Sarah Jean Horwitz
Publisher: DC Comics
Release Date: October 29
Genres: Action, Fantasy

I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Official Synopsis

Far below Themyscira, Ares, the God of War, has been imprisoned for generations, repenting his past sins. But his new cellmate Grail may have an unexpected effect on him…and the plan they’ve come up with threatens to change Themyscira—and the world—forever!

When Wonder Woman rushes to eastern Europe to rescue Steve Trevor from a mission gone wrong, she’ll find herself face to face with a very new, very different God of War. It’s true, Ares has been reborn on Earth—but has he changed for the better? Of all the role models in the world, he seems to have chosen…Wonder Woman?! Diana and Steve Trevor better watch their backs, because Ares isn’t the only creature of myth to find his way to Man’s World…and he’s not the only resurrected Olympian either.

Review

I’m a huge fan of Wonder Woman, so I was really excited to read this book. And I was not disappointed. Though in the beginning there wasn’t much context, it was really easy to grasp what was going on.

The story, though action-packed as usual, has some very interesting themes woven throughout. What does justice really mean? How can you know if you are the one to mete justice? That’s always been Wonder Woman’s motto, so looking that in all its complexities was fun, especially since Ares thought he was the good guy for once.

I also love how Diana’s and Steve’s relationship is portrayed in this comic. They tease and have fun—it’s so easy to see that they’re in love. Their devotion for each other is shown throughout the comic, and it just made things really sweet.

Shout out to Aphrodite, who is hilarious in this comic. The mythical beasts have very fun personalities as well, and I’m curious to see how their story plays out in the next volume.

The art is great! There are a lot of fun action scenes, new characters and old, and lots of cool settings as well.

Overall, a very fun comic. Would definitely recommend to Wonder Woman fans and anyone looking for heroes who kick butt.

Who’s your favorite superhero?

  2. That’s AWESOME! Well, I REALLY do love Wonder Woman after the movie that came out a couple years ago, but I’d say my favorite superhero of all time has to be Captain America. I love the whole romance between him and Agent Peggy Carter, and I ADORE his relationship with Bucky.
